Nana Knows Seniors Summer Camp: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Nana Knows Seniors Summer Camp?

The Nana Knows Seniors Summer Camp is a five-day experience created especially for older adults. We’re pleased to offer this opportunity thanks to the generosity of the Ohio Arts Council as well as our partnerships with Thiossane Institute and Food Leads. Our summer camp will be a welcoming place for seniors to learn, share stories, enjoy music and movement, connect with others, and celebrate the wisdom gained through life.

When is the camp?

The camp will take place Monday, August 24 through Friday, August 28, 2026. Dropoffs and arrivals for camp can begin as early as 8:30 AM and the workshops will begin at 9:00 AM. Camp will end each day at 2:00 PM each day.

Where will the camp be held?

Historic Lincoln Theatre Ballroom
769 East Long Street
Columbus, Ohio 43203

Website for the Lincoln Theatre is https://www.lincolntheatrecolumbus.com/

Who may attend?

The camp is designed for adults age 65 and older. Nana Knows welcome camp registrants of all identities and backgrounds. We do not discriminate based on race or ethnicity, income, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, marital status, or any other protected characteristic. Everyone will be treated with dignity and respect.

Do I need to attend all five days?

Registrants can select which day(s) they would like to attend the Nana Knows Seniors Summer Camp. That said, we encourage participants to attend as many of the five days as possible so they can enjoy the complete experience and build connections with other campers.

‍“Harambe” means coming together in unity. These workshops will offer an engaging opportunity to explore history, culture, community, and the experiences that have shaped lives and stories in our Central Ohio community.

What is Sankofa Storytelling?

‍“Sankofa” means to “go back and get that which we have forgotten”. It is the practice of looking to the past for wisdom that can guide the present and future. Participants will be invited to remember and share meaningful stories from their lives, especially in connection to the Harambe History lessons. Attendees may share as much or as little as they choose.

What kind of movement will we do?

Koteba is a traditional form of village theater, music, and dance from the Bambara people of Mali. It uses rhythmic movement to address social issues and build community bonds.
